Global Mobility, Streamlined: How We Built a CoE That Scales

🧩 The Opportunity

As the Global Mobility Manager for a multinational organization operating in over 20 countries, the challenge was to manage international mobility efficiently with limited resources. The organization lacked a unified approach to mobility, resulting in inconsistent practices, inefficiencies, and over-reliance on central teams. There was a pressing need to:

  • Establish global consistency in mobility processes.
  • Enable local HR teams to manage mobility tasks independently.
  • Maintain high service quality with a lean team.

🛠️ Our Approach

To address these challenges, a lean but highly effective Centre of Expertise (CoE) was established with just two dedicated team members. The CoE focused on:

  • Designing scalable mobility programs tailored to a global workforce.
  • Creating a global policy framework to ensure consistency across regions.
  • Standardizing operational processes to streamline execution.

A key enabler was the development of a centralized SharePoint portal, which served as the hub for:

  • Accessing global mobility policies.
  • Initiating mobility-related tasks.
  • Interacting with external vendors.

The portal featured a comprehensive suite of standardized templates, SOPs, and self-serve resources, empowering local HR teams to manage mobility activities with minimal support from the CoE.

🏆 The Outcome

The strategic design and implementation of the CoE delivered significant benefits:

  • Increased Efficiency: Local HR teams could independently manage day-to-day mobility tasks, reducing bottlenecks and freeing up the CoE for strategic initiatives.
  • Global Consistency: Standardized tools and processes ensured uniformity in mobility practices across all regions.
  • Cost Control: The lean CoE model minimized overhead while maintaining high service quality.
  • Scalability: The framework proved adaptable and scalable, supporting the organization’s growth without requiring proportional increases in headcount.
